Freddy Moore was an American musician born on July 19, 1950, who became known for his dynamic work in the rock and power-pop scene. He led bands such as The Kats and The Nu Kats and is best remembered for the track “It’s Not a Rumour,” which he co-wrote with his then-wife and peaked in visibility on MTV in the early 1980s. His musical style blended rock, new wave and power-pop sensibilities.

Early Life

Frederick George grew up in the Twin Cities area, and his family briefly lived in San Francisco, California around 1966-67 before returning to Minnesota. His birth name is Frederick George Moore, though he was also known as Rick Moore earlier in life. He spent his later high school years in Richfield, Minnesota, graduating in 1968. After high school he enrolled at the University of Minnesota to study Music Theory and Composition. From a young age he taught himself guitar and began writing his own songs, inspired by the rock music of the 1960s.

Career

Freddy Moore formed and led several bands, including Skogie (originally “Skogie and the Flaming Pachucos”), The Kats, and The Nu Kats. His breakthrough song was “It’s Not a Rumour”, co-written with Demi Moore and recorded with The Nu Kats. He worked in the genres of rock and power-pop, often performing in Los Angeles clubs such as the Whisky a Go Go and the The Troubadour. Later in his career he released music independently under his own label (General Records), and years after his main band-activity he recorded with an act called The Kat Club.

Death

Freddy Moore died on August 25, 2022 in Los Angeles, California. He had been living with Alzheimer’s disease for many years before his passing.
